Colonel David Mason’s Fairfax Stars AAU basketball team defeated Team Clutch from New Jersey recently, 42-38, to win the (14U) American Youth Basketball Association National Championship. In what was billed as a battle of giants for the championship game held in Chantilly Va., Mason’s Stars team raised their defensive intensity and held Team Clutch to 35 points below their tournament average. The Stars’ completed the tournament with an undefeated, 7-0 record. Three of Mason’s players were voted to the all-tournament team and one was voted tournament MVP.
Mason, a colonel in the U.S. Air Force, is a Sampson County native and the son of E.R. and Clementine Mason.
The Fairfax Stars team is based out of Northern Virginia and is composed of 13 highly talented and skilled basketball players from that area. The team, in its first year together, competed in 10 tournaments during the 2012 AAU season. The Stars won three tournaments to include the national championship, placed second in three others and twice finished third.
Mason’s team will continue competing together at the 15(U) level during next AAU season and will play in tournaments held in N.C. The future is bright for this group of talented basketball players.
