NC STATE PURVIS TO TRANSFER

Purvis to transfer from N.C. State

Freshman guard Rodney Purvis has decided to transfer from N.C. State. Read more about his decision and C.J. Leslie's departure for the NBA here.
Purvis, a McDonald's All-American from Raleigh, averaged 8.3 points and 2.4 rebounds this season and started 23 games. He provided scoring in transition and often an emotional lift for the Wolfpack with his dunks and energy.
He confirmed the decision on his Twitter account on Monday afternoon.
"Tears won't stop falling," Purvis wrote. "I enjoyed every moment here. I still love you guys, no matter how you may feel towards me. Thank y'all !"
Purvis is the ninth player to transfer from the program since the end of the 2009-10 season and sixth since coach Mark Gottfried was hired in April 2011.
Gottfried thanked Purvis on Twitter Monday afternoon and wished him luck in the future.
Purvis started 23 of the first 25 games and then his role changed in mid-February. Freshman T.J. Warren took Purvis' spot in the starting lineup before an 84-66 home win over Florida State on Feb. 19.
Purvis came off the bench for the last 10 games of the season, and scored a season-best 21 points in a home win over Boston College during that span.
His minutes were also reduced as a reserve. He averaged 17.9 minutes in the final 10 games of the season, compared to 28.6 over the first 25 games
Purvis almost missed his freshman season at N.C. State. He was initially ruled ineligible by the NCAA in August for academic issues connected with his former high school.
Purvis missed the team's trip to Spain in August but won his appeal with the NCAA in September.
Purvis originally committed to Louisville but ended up staying closer to home when Gottfried and his staff were hired. With Louisville set to join the ACC in 2015, it's unlikely N.C. State will release Purvis to another conference school.

DON'T EVEN WANT TO KNOW WHAT I KNOW

YET
Tue, 04/02/2013 - 08:15 — YAR8pack
Yet you'll do a drive-by troll statement a la some high school kid gossiping. Pffft. Doesn't matter what you "know." Purvis is gone.
Hey, you don't want to know what I know about Roy...
To JPD and a couple others, I should've refrained from a sweeping generalization of Purvis' generation. I have younger coworkers that are hardworking and "man-up" when it comes to getting work done and accepting fault for their shortcomings. However, it does seem, to me, that the younger generation is more prone to absolve themselves from responsibility and look for an easy out. In addition to my full-time job, I teach two courses at a local community college at night. You wouldn't believe how many kids ask for extra-credit. I don't do extra-credit. 1) Life doesn't offer extra-credit. 2) College is more about preparing one for the real world. 3) I don't want to grade BS work for a slacker.

GENERATIONS
Tue, 04/02/2013 - 12:54 — JPDOhio
I understand your point and I think Gatr's makes a valid observation about a generation's views toward the generation that follows. My personal opinion (which I acknowledge is in the minority) is that today's generations are not much different than previous generations. The main difference today is that members of the younger generation are more open about their expectations and feelings and are not shy about expressing them. The rise of social media has a lot to do with it, IMHO.
Take care and enjoy your Spring, if it ever gets here.

SLACKER GENERATION
Tue, 04/02/2013 - 08:47 — gvillegatr
I'll sum it up in one short sentence.
Every generation says the next generation is slacker than theirs was and it gets worse when you are talking about the following generation ... etc.
No idea why you feel like you need to apologize for saying what you did. You weren't wrong, just frustrated and said it. Anyone who takes what you said as literal (ie 100% of the generation) isn't right either.

THANKS

I felt I needed to clarify my statement from being a broad generalization. I try to refrain from those in life and yet I fell below my personal standard.
This whole everyone gets a trophy and a pat on the back when they mess up annoys me. I'm not saying rule with an iron fist. However, if you keep telling everyone everything's going to be alright with no consequences and no accountability, it won't be long before...well...you know.
As for Purvis, I've read everything from he was extremely peeved about the lack of playing time (again, his fault for the horrible play when he was in there) to his mom was really upset with how he wasn't being coddled, to not focusing on being the best he could be, to he was trash talking Gott to incoming recruits, to grades, to partaking in "wacky tabacky" and getting busted for it. But seeing all of that is kinda like that insurance company commercial about not believing everything you read on the internet. Best of luck to Purvis. But sometimes the grass ain't greener on the other side. Harrow, Mays, DeThaey, Raymond and Harris can most likely attest to that. Though, 6 transfers in two years is troubling and brings up a red flag. Who knows.
Here's to hoping Warren and Lewis don't leave.

PASTURE ARE GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE
Tue, 04/02/2013 - 13:34 — gvillegatr
Not in college atheltics it is not. Nor did you imply they were, FTR.
That's total bull malarkey when it comes to leaving a school such as state and going to another school. I want someone to point towards some evidence that just one guy was better for leaving a major school in a big conference and it worked out well for them. IE they made it to the pros and got paid lots of money.
Whether it is the schools fault (doubtful) or the players (highly likely) they end up in a worse situation, do not graduate and go back home to do nothing. Congrats, Mr Purvis, you are on the fast track to exactly that unless you grow up and do a 180.

Well....I guess Purvis has forgot about all the help he received from NCSU officials that allowed him to play in the NCAA....your welcome Rodney!

PURVIS TRANSFER
Mon, 04/01/2013 - 19:38 — b_actor77
I'm surprised at this 'cause the kid repeated 8th gr., likely a good decision from the academic standpoint, but then finished HS in 3 yrs., never an easy task even for top students. Now he chooses to sit out a year. 2 things that puzzle me - if he wants more playing time Rod would gotten as much as he wants next year with Lewis at the point TJ Warren at small foward and himself at shooting gaurd. Some big recruits coming in to handle the frontcourt and it could have been an exciting year, with plenty of exposure, if that's what he wanted.
Now, with everybody else leaving will TJ go pro?
I'm not a State fan, but this is a terrible year for the ACC, only getting worse. Despite Dick Vitale and other know-nothings demanding a #1 seed for Miami because they won reg. season + conf. tourn. title, the 'Canes showed their true colors in the NCAA. All their "greatness" was achieved against a very weak ACC. What happened to the genius Coach of the Year?

IT'S NOT A GENERATIONAL
Mon, 04/01/2013 - 16:39 — TDiddyt
It's not a generational thing, it's an environment, expectation, society thing.
Plenty of 18-21 year olds in the military proving that.

OTHER SIDE NOT ALWAYS GREENER
Mon, 04/01/2013 - 16:39 — Mmtume
While I am shocked that Purvis has decided to transfer, it is in keeping with the mindset and the culture of some of these spoiled athletes today. The "me first" attitude resonated loud and clear with this team this past year and as a result, that attitude destroyed what could have been a special season for the Pack.
I certainly hope that Purvis has carefully thought out this decision because the grass is not always greener on the other side. Three cases in point: Julius Mays transferred from State and went to Wright State and then transferred to Kentucky. Wright State is in the Final Four while Kentucky, with all of its mega talent, never made it to the Big Dance. The case of Ryan Harrow who transferred from State to Kentucky, sat out a year as required and when he finally got a chance to play, played like he never belonged on the team. Needless to say, the Wildcats were one of the most dysfunctional teams in the country--barring none. Now after one year of playing, he reportedly is transferring again--this time to Georgia State. Then there is the case of DaShaw Painter who transferred for "family" reasons which were proabably more legit than some of the others transfer reasons. Though Painter was closer to home, ODU had one of its worse seasons in the history of Monarch basketball.
I am not certain who is the driving force behind Purvis' move but my advice to him: "Be careful what you ask for."
I am certain that Mays, Harrow and Painter, all thought the grass was greener on the other side only to find out, it was not true.
With that being said, I wish Purvis well.

WRIGHT STATE IS IN THE FINAL
Mon, 04/01/2013 - 16:43 — TDiddyt
Wright State is in the Final Four? Where did you get your bracket? I see Witchita State, but no Wright State.
And all things considered, I think the grass was greener for Mays at Wright State, at least from a personal perspective.

Thanks for bringing my error to my attention. You are right--Whichita State is in the Final Four--not WRIGHT STATE. My apologies.

AT THIS RATE ....

.. we're not gonna be able to field a team next year. We are currently down to 7 scholarship players. And Warren still hasn't made an NBA decision.

UCONN
Mon, 04/01/2013 - 15:55 — YAR8pack
He's not going to Louisville. He's going to UCONN. Kevin Ollie was classy enough to follow and "tweet" Rodney before he even announced he was transferring. :-D
As I said earlier, NC State will miss his depth. But if his primadonna self can't get on board because he's too worried about PT when he only hurt himself in that respect, then via con dios, Rodney.
Rumor (we all know how that goes) has it Rodney's madre had a lot to do with the decision for Rodney to leave.

UCONN PROBATION?
Mon, 04/01/2013 - 19:46 — b_actor77
Lots of instability up there. New coach , searching for a conference. Maybe Purvis should return to HS and make up for the year he missed? Always seem to be going on or coming off NCAA punishment of some kind, so Rod better time it right.

AS AN ASIDE
Mon, 04/01/2013 - 16:08 — JPDOhio
Did CJ Leslie actually announce that he is leaving for the NBA this morning, or did I imagine it? I find it interesting that there is nothing in ACCNOW or STATENOW, although one could argue that the announcement isn't really news. It's not like we didn't know it was coming.

NC STATE IMPLOSION
Mon, 04/01/2013 - 15:18 — Vegasjoe57
I agree with "Joke" above...maybe also there is another part of the story? Such as he is flunking out and needs a year off to get his academic standing in order? Who knows and who cares?
This team should have accomplished so much more...and now they are all abandoning ship, Wood and Howell excepted due to completing eligibility....
Most players today have been babied since 8th grade...it's why they are spoiled rotten and lack mental toughness and discipline!
And that holy grail of the NBA is an oasis in the desert since 80% are bankrupt or financially destitute within 2 years of leaving the league!

NEXT YEAR FOR GRADS
Mon, 04/01/2013 - 19:52 — b_actor77
Wood would be a good fit in Europe or So. America, and I can see Howell, Leslie and Brown catching on with an NBA team, or in the D-League. If so, it's up to them to work their way up. I know Marshell the UNC pt. gaurd who left early in 2012 was sent to the D-League after a month - any word on him?

JOKE
Mon, 04/01/2013 - 14:53 — YAR8pack
What a crappy joke this turned out to be.
Sucks to lose depth, but if he's this weak mentally, then as Curly Bill says in Tombstone, "well...bye."
Rodney could be a good player, but his premadonna (sp?) attitude is going to hinder him wherever he goes. All the talent in the world, but just like the tin man, he has no heart.
Random aside: Maybe I'm wrong, but a friend and I got to talking about how our generation is the last of the suck-it-up and work generation and how the USA is now in the throws of the Me, Me, and Me generation of entitlement. I think Purvis is representative of that generation.
It is troublesome this is the 6th overall transfer to leave NC State in Gott's 2+ years. Sensing a pattern. Though I do firmly believe Purvis felt like he needed to be catered to and babied.
Not that there wasn't already plenty of pressure to get D Lee, but this raised the stakes a ton.

NO JOKE
Mon, 04/01/2013 - 16:02 — JPDOhio
I've already said my piece on Rodney, so I won't repeat it, other than to say he needs to grow up and change his major to Drama. Your mental weakness comment is spot on. That is why his PT diminished when the pressure built at the end of the season.
You are right about the heightened need for Desmond Lee to come to add depth. Maybe this transfer seals the deal. But don't forget that Ralston Turner becomes eligible next year, so I think the Pack is in better shape at guard than they are in the frontcourt. Lot's of talent, but not a lot of experience.
Regarding your "me generation" comment, I don't like to generalize that broadly. Certainly there are a larger percentage in that group because the parenting done by many in my generation was too much like Sidney Lowe's coaching style. Totally devoid of discipline. That said, we have interns and new staff in our office who work hard, are committed and are team players. So I won't indict an entire generation.
You have to find the kids with the right attitude and grab them up. I would acknowledge this is difficult with high school hoops stars who have been catered to their entire lives. But it is not impossible. It will be interesting to see what happens next year with a roster almost totally populated with Gott's own recruits. He preaches team attitude all the time, but can he get buy in from everyone? We'll see.

DISCLAIMER: I AM A DIEHARD
Mon, 04/01/2013 - 16:37 — Hubert_Papes
Disclaimer: I am a diehard UNC alum and love watching Tobacco Road basketball as much as anything on this planet. For this reason it bothers me that these players seem to be making such poor decisions regarding their futures (perhaps unfair for me to judge not knowing their situations in full). I just can't wrap my head around walking away from such a high-exposure opportunity as being the leader of a team in the Triangle.
I can't say I know much about Purvis' or Leslie's attitude or work-ethic, and I wouldn't generalize their characteristics to the population on the whole, but I do agree with earlier comments regarding the work ethic in the country. I think a lot can be said about the difference in attitude from a generational standpoint. Blame technology, blame parenting, blame education standards; you wouldn't be wrong. Regardless of the reason, there are still recent grads, like myself, who are waiting to be called upon so they can showcase their talent and work ethic. I guess what gives me frustration is seeing someone with all the ingredients to succeed and making excuses instead of changing from within.
