Basketball practice began this week for a season that starts Nov. 10. Who will replace Milton as boys champion in the highest classification?

As you know, Milton is ineligible for the post-season in the aftermath of allegations of undue influence of coach David Boyd to persuade student-athletes to transfer into the Milton district. Boyd is out as head coach. Soon after, Milton’s only returning starter, Jalyn Patterson, transferred to a school in Florida. Milton should still be pretty good, but obviously won’t win the title.

Milton came under scrutiny for transfers, and transfers will remain in the news this basketball season.

Let’s see if I’ve got this straight …

Brannen Green, the Kansas-bound forward that many consider to be the top recruit in Georgia, has transferred to Tift County and will play with another blue-chip player, three-year starter Tadric Jackson.

Another reported transfer is Kejuan Johnson, one of the elite sopohomores in the state. He went from Wheeler to Westlake and will play with poing guard Tony Bagtas, a first-team all-state player from last season.

We hear that Wheeler is getting a potential star from California in sophomore Jerron Love. And Harold Givens is one and done at Norcross. He originally came from Northside of Columbus. Now he’s gone to a prep school in North Carolina.

It’s still football season, so we haven’t had much time to study this, but I kinda like these eight boys team:

Alaina Coates, a 6-foot-4 center from Irmo, S.C

Tennessee's recruiting guest list for this weekend is one visitor shorter than before.

Alaina Coates, a 6-foot-4 center from Irmo, S.C., dropped the Lady Vols from consideration and won't be making an official visit. Instead, she will choose between South Carolina and Georgia. Coates is ranked 28th in the Class of 2013 by ESPN HoopGurlz.

Still, the Lady Vols will be entertaining four recruits for the team's biggest recruiting weekend of the fall. And there will be a big post presence with Mercedes Russell, a 6-5 center from Springfield, Ore. She is the top-ranked player in the class. Russell averaged 26 points, 15 rebounds and five assists per game last season and was named the Class 5A player of the year for Oregon.

Russell is deciding between UT and Louisville, and will visit the Cardinals next weekend.

Russell is one of two top 10 prospects visiting this weekend. The other is guard Tyler Scaife from Little Rock, Ark., who is ranked No. 9 in the class by HoopGurlz.

The other visitors will be Emmonnie Henderson, a 6-2 forward from Edwardsville, Ill., who's ranked No. 40, and Jordan Reynolds, a 5-11 guard from Portland, who's ranked No. 42.

The NCAA says coaches cannot send this photo to prospective recruits

Hoping to take another step toward eliminating cheating in college athletics, the NCAA has banned coaches from using something that apparently provides them too great a competitive edge.

Believe it or not, the NCAA has clarified coaches are prohibited from using Instagram to apply a digital filter to a photo before sending it to a prospective recruit. The Bylaw Blog's John Infante uncovered the proof in this education column published by the NCAA:

Question: May a coach take a photo and use software (e.g., Instagram, Photoshop, Camera Awesome, Camera+,) to enhance the content of the photo (e.g., changed color of photo to sepia tones or add content to the photograph), and send it to a prospective student-athlete as an attachment it to an email or direct social media message?

Answer: No, a photograph that has been altered or staged for a recruiting purpose cannot be sent to a prospective student-athlete.

The purpose of the rule is to prevent coaches from altering a photo to put a recruit in his team's uniform, which just by itself seems like an unnecessary rule. What's the harm in a coach handing a kid a picture book with photos doctored to show him sinking the winning basket or celebrating a championship in the jersey of his prospective school?

Where the rule goes from silly to absurd, however, is when it includes Instagram among the banned software. What recruiting advantage could possibly be gained by a coach adding sepia tones or vintage effects to a photo he sends a recruit?

That the NCAA bothers to even worry about trivialities like this at a time when there are so many more serious problems facing college athletics is a sign that its priorities remain out of whack. Instead of ending our long national Instagram nightmare, maybe the NCAA could work on handing out more consistent penalties for programs guilty of major violations or bringing back a later early entry decision date for potential NBA draft prospects.

NCAA officials will often argue they receive too much criticism for what they do wrong and not enough credit for what they do right. Unfortunately with a phone book-esque rulebook chock full of inane rules like this, it's hard to see that changing anytime soon.
